BREAKING: Shaft heeft seks met kinderen

16 november

'Trapped in the Closet', een South Park-aflevering waarin Scientology gekenmerkt wordt als iets om van in je vuistje te giechelen, en die veel stof etc. zal doen opwaaien, is op tv.

4 januari

In een interview zegt Isaac Hayes, Scientology-aanhanger en professioneel Chefstemgevert over bovengenoemde aflevering:

Well, I talked to Matt and Trey [Stone en Parker, de makers etc. van South Park, red.] about that. They didn't let me know until it was done. I said, "Guys, you have it all wrong. We're not like that. I know that's your thing, but get your information correct, because somebody might believe that shit, you know?" But I understand what they're doing. I told them to take a couple of Scientology courses, and understand what we do.

Isaac Hayes kondigt aan met South Park te stoppen, omdat hij vindt dat ze te ver gaan in hun respectloosheid ten opzichte van bepaalde religies:

There is a place in this world for satire, but there is a time when satire ends and intolerance and bigotry towards religious beliefs of others begins. Religious beliefs are sacred to people, and at all times should be respected and honored. As a civil rights activist of the past 40 years, I cannot support a show that disrespects those beliefs and practices.

Laten we dit, voor het gemak, 'moest hij dit soms van iemand zeggen' noemen.

Matt Stone reageerde diezelfde dag nog op Hayes' ontslag:

This is 100 percent having to do with his faith of Scientology... He has no problem — and he's cashed plenty of checks — with our show making fun of Christians.

South Park wijdt de openingsaflevering van haar tiende seizoen aan een plotselinge pedofilie van Chef. Voor een aflevering waarin hij elk kind dat zijn pad kruist aanbiedt seks met hem te hebben is het een nog behoorlijk respectabel afscheid geworden, zowel van Chef als van Isaac Hayes. Zo zegt Kyle op Chefs (spoiler etc.) begrafenis:

A lot of us don't agree with the choices that Chef has made in the last few days. Some of us feel hurt and confused that he seemed to turn his back on us. But we can't let the events of the past few weeks take away the memories of how Chef made us smile. We shouldn't be mad at Chef for leaving us. We should be mad at that fruity little club for scrambling his brains.
